Over the years, Instructure has received accolades for our “easy to use” solutions and “best in class” software. Affirmations like those helps fuel our journey to find better solutions for our customers, but at our core, we continue to find new ways to better support our customers’ learning goals. While Bridge Practice’s peer-to-peer video assessment and coaching already empowers teams to scale their ability to learn, practice, and reinforce skills, we realized we could enable users to do an even wider range of training.
Our talented Practice development team recognized we needed to move beyond video as the sole channel by which learners responded to exercises, so they introduced screen capture (also commonly referred to as screen recording). Adding to our recent release of audio-only response, screen capture helps learners reinforce a skill when a video response isn’t the best option.
So, when does it make sense to enable screen capture for your learners? Here are several scenarios where screen recording can be leveraged to reinforce and strengthen skills, and it is an excellent tool for effective employee training. Here are a few ways we believe it will help effectively train employees:
- PROCESS-BASED KNOWLEDGE: Ensure your team is following a specific process path. For example, make sure your team completes specific steps due to regulatory or compliance requirements. You can reinforce understanding on how to use a specific tool, software, or system captured via the learner’s screen.
- PRESENTATION SKILLS IN CONTEXT: Make sure that your sales organization is presenting the right messaging by enabling screen capture to include presentation practice that combines a voiceover while showing the presentation.
- BETTER INSIGHT INTO PRACTICAL ENGAGEMENT: Get a more complete picture of an employee’s performance, based on a specific functional area — like your Customer Service team. You can understand how they go about completing critical tasks, how long it takes them to complete those tasks, and how effectively they use the tools. Finally, you can see if they follow the correct and appropriate paths to capture critical information. This helps you identify opportunities additional learning and training, if and when needed.
- PERFORMANCE REVIEW LEARNING TOOL: Leverage screen capture as a learning tool during performance review meetings to play back employee interactions with tools. This helps employees review their own performance, easily capturing both their strengths and their weaknesses.
