Specific, actionable feedback is crucial for skill development. However, giving constructive feedback is a tricky skill in itself. In a podcast for the Harvard Business Review, Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman of leadership development consultancy firm Zenger Folkman discuss helpful thought processes behind providing feedback. Critical or “corrective” feedback and positive reinforcement should go hand-in-hand and become part of regular manager-employee conversations. It’s important to note that before giving feedback, Zenger and Folkman suggest that managers practice giving meaningful feedback with a colleague. Practice, as we all know, makes perfect.
