With the possibility for up to one-third of the workforce needing to change jobs by 2030 due to automation, the need for collaboration between companies, governments, higher education institutions, and nonprofits to help workers build skills and translate those to jobs is more critical than ever. In an effort to help workers gain access to develop skills and build their careers, Walmart and Google have partnered to invest $5 million in several organizations working to reskill the workforce and match these skills to jobs, including the Drucker Institute, which is working to provide the residents of South Bend, Indiana with access to skill-building; Opportunity @ Work, which has a program for underserved groups that focuses on skills and competence over degrees; and the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy, with its initiative to help entrepreneurs use technology to create innovations in economic prosperity. The joint investment between Walmart and Google also aims to encourage other companies and expert groups to work together to provide “training and education for their own workforce or in the broader workforce ecosystem to help build strong businesses and a healthy, thriving society.”
