How can you earn your degree on the cheap? Kaplan, one of the biggest for-profit college companies in the country, recently announced Open College - a pathway to your degree based on what you already bring to the table. Now, if you want to complete your degree without racking up considerable debt, you can. Through its use of assessments, Open College can give you credit for your prior learning and give credit for future learning from any source, including, but not limited to, Kaplan University, EdX, Coursera, and the Saylor Foundation. For $100 per assessment, a $195 monthly subscription fee, and a $371-per-credit charge for a six-credit capstone course, you can finish your degree in a year or so for only a few thousand dollars. A student who enrolls in Open College with no college credits and pursues the program for 4 years could earn his or her bachelor's degree for roughly $15,000. Could this be the new wave of competency-based degrees?
