Twenty years ago the IT industry pioneered a new approach to credentialing. Employers in the tech industry banned together and devised a process to identify and establish a set of industry standards for what a well-trained IT worker needs to know. These standards were then turned into a series of tests. When hiring a new employee today, IT employers look for certificates as reliable predictors of needed job skills rather than a degree or a prestigious institution on one's resume.
