Skill Development: How many hours should you dedicate – 10,000 or 20?

By Morgan Loewith

In a prior post from our COO Emily Foote, she referenced the 10,000 hour rule, popularized by Malcolm Gladwell, arguing that it may no longer take 10,000 to necessarily master a skill. Instead of all of the repetition, skill mastery could come from as little as 20 hours of focused practice. 10,000 to 20 hours makes a pretty substantial difference for anyone trying to gain mastery of a new skill. Read on in this excellent guest post from Emily on HR.com about how many hours you should really dedicate to practicing skills.
