The tables have turned. Traditional-age students are now a minority on college campuses across the country. The average student is over 25, working, and has a family. Even though the tables have turned, Michelle Weise, Senior Research Fellow at the Clayton Christensen Institute for Disruptive Innovation, argues that higher education institutions have not changed to reflect their new reality. In other words, higher education institutions are not doing enough to serve their growing non-traditional audience. Weise offers colleges and universities a few suggestions, not least of which includes providing more programming that offers students direct, and fast, labor market outcomes, such as stackable certifications that allow students to demonstrate to employers that they have the skills necessary for today's workforce.
