Over the last decade a consensus has emerged "that broad, transferrable skills are the desired product of college." The tricky part is how to transform programs and courses to effectively teach skills. Some institutions, like Emory University, are leading the shift toward a “new canon” of teaching skills. Emory specifically focuses on the “skill of using and evaluating evidence” across any and all disciplines, from environmental sciences to psychology and tourism. Deemed the “Nature of Evidence,” Emory’s campus-wide skills-teaching initiative already includes 22 departments, redesigned courses, and assessment of student progress. The Chronicle of Higher Education’s Dan Berrett examines how Emory professors enable students to foster the skill of evidence, what other institutions and organizations are doing to standardize teaching skills, and the challenges higher education faces in truly embracing this new canon.
