With skill requirements in the job market rapidly changing, many are turning to online courses, boot camps, and other organizations that offer certificates or badges as proof of skill development. At the moment, however, having a online certificate does not entirely make up for a lack of a college degree. While some companies may recognize online credentials, few managers regard them as valid, especially with a lack of standardization. Now there are organizations working to create specific standards or legitimize such programs. LinkedIn is piloting a program in Phoenix and Denver, Obama’s TechHire hopes to partner up training organizations and employers, and the Lumina Foundation has funded a grant to create an online registry for specific credentials. With powerhouse projects like these, will the diploma be disrupted? Mark Niemann Ross of Lynda.com sums it up well: “The most important skill in the employee base of the future is the ability to apply what you've learned.”
