Ellen Moir, CEO of the New Teacher Center, has coined the term “The Disillusionment Phase,” which refers to the hardest time of year for first-year teachers: October and November. Before the end of their first year of teaching, one in 10 teachers will quit. However, first-year teachers who have mentors are more likely to stay on the job. Roxanna Elden, an English teacher at Hialeah High School near Miami, has created a “disillusionment power pack” to help motivate and encourage frustrated teachers, especially for those who lack mentors. Teachers who sign up for the free pack receive motivational emails every few days. Elden includes advice and personal anecdotes in the emails, with the intent to provide a place of support for teachers seeking encouragement.
